Getting a Job in this Economy

There has been a lot going on in the economy this year. Many people have lost jobs while others hang on to theirs carefully. Others have not been affected.

For those people who have lost their job, my career advice is not to put on rosy colored glasses. In my opinion, being realistic is important in the job search. If someone has been applying for jobs for weeks or months with no results, these days it often means there are just too many applicants. There are many people who could have easily gotten numerous job offers a year or two ago, and now it seems like the twilight zone.

There have been quite a lot of layoffs. With those layoffs, especially here in California, that means it is quite a lot more work getting a job in this economy. One’s cover letter and resume may get lost in a huge stack that an employer receives.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel in my opinion. The economy will get better. If employers are not calling back an applicant at the moment, that person can just keep pacing themself, spending their time networking, looking carefully for jobs, and applying for jobs. If they already have a good resume and cover letter, it is just a matter of time to have the perfect fit come along. Or, soon enough the economy will get better enough so that the huge stacks of resumes employers are getting become less.

Here is a good book about getting a job in this tough economy, discounted about 1/3 off with this link.
