Business and Career Advice from my Mentor Father in Law
When getting life and career coaching, I feel it is important to learn from a mentor you trust on business and career. One of my mentors is my father in law. Over time, he has spent countless hours coaching me on business and career. Here is some business and career information he gave to me for the purpose of this Website. I came up with questions and he provided answers.
- What are a few of the most important lessons you have learned in doing business over the years? Also, what is the best way to get ahead in business?
- Focus and put 100% of one’s personal attention and effort in the type of business they are running.
- Find as much info as possible about the activities of your competitors in the same field to enable make decisions on pricing and marketing. This helps you to stay always one step ahead of competitors.
- Do not speculate on hearsay. Always check and recheck your data before making a major investment.
- If you could change a few things you did in past businesses, what would they be?
- One of my business investments did not work out well. Instead of pulling out when I could, I put in more capital thinking that things would get better. The lesson here is to cut your losses and know when to get out.
- Upon deciding to retire at age 60 I should have invested in real estate when it was booming.
- Time is an asset that cannot be renewed once used. I have wasted too much time in my studying time and started to work seriously at age 27. One should finish their study as quickly as possible and start on their career immediately after graduation.
- If you were giving advice to someone just out of school on how to choose a career direction, what would your advice be?
- If you are a lucky person and have a choice in deciding on a career direction, choose a career you like most. Prefferably choose a carer in line with your field of study. A lot of people don’t have a choice.
- If you don’t have a choice in career and must pick from what is available pick the first chance, put all efforts and attention to get forward. You can always change your career some years later.
